Morita is the youngest daughter of the famous adventurer Marco Polo. Marco, Morita and their family are swept up in a race to protect Venice from the combined attacks of Genoa, their rival for trade, and the Mamluk King of Egypt, hungry for land and wealth. The Polos travel from Venetian canals to merchant brigantine ships playing a deadly game of hide and seek in the Adriatic sea, and then back to land to follow the famous Silk Road when Morita is kidnapped. Her race across Persia with the true Mongolian Golden Horde leads to intrigue, treachery and battle in the heart of Venice, as the Polos and their fellow citizens risk their city to defeat enemies on land and sea.

This is a terrific and quite involved novel, with the youngest daughter of Marco Polo as the main character. The book tells you about life in Venice at the time of Marco Polo, with the focus taking you to Constantinople and many lands beyond. You have a detailed look of life on sailing ships as the action moves from place to place, with a chase back to Venice. Marco Polo works to evade his enemies with his superior ability to sail through tricky weather. All of this is presented to the reader in rich detail. The book is spectacularly researched, from the political life and festivals of medieval Venice, to the markets of Constantinople, to the life of travelers in empty lands to the life of the Mongol horde as they pursued wars of conquest. The quality of writing is lucid and elegant, full of rich detail. It is beautifully illustrated with old maps and paintings. This is a must read for any child 10 and older who enjoys good books.Product details
