This is a book about heavy issues; it deals with HIV and child abuse. But still it is an enjoyable read.School Principal Sean Sullivan, meets Social worker Emery Benton when a child at the school is abused at home.
The two men instantly feel attracted to each other, but one thing stands in the way of happiness.
Sean is HIV positive..and even being healthy and well, getting the right medication, his condition makes him push Emery away...Fortunately for Sean and this story, Emery is no quitter..
The story is really well written, the two men are sweet and likeable, even if sometimes I wanted to smack them over the head, when they were acting stupid;)
The people around them are nice and caring too, the foster mom in particular, so all on all this is a great book that I enjoyed a lot.
In the real world I wish that every Sean gets their Emery, they need and deserve that.

Perfect for Me D H Starr 9781608208456 Books Reviews
great love story. It's a book you just can't put down once you have started.
Overall this was not a bad book.
But, really, how can two people that were supposedly so dedicated and caring of others constantly zone out during important conversations and not hear those very serious discussions? Just something that I personally thought was a bit bizarre and at odds with the characters being portrayed. And annoying.
I enjoyed the plot of this book, and the POV. It was refreshing, and well written. A nice summer beach read.
It's not a story of a man with HIV who falls in love. It's a story of a man who falls in love that happens to have HIV, but doesn't let it run his life.
When I read it, I had problems connecting with the Sean (the main character) because of his attitude when dealing with Emery. As I got deeper into the story, I started to wonder if it was me wouldn't I do the same thing? Would I want a lover who was stuck with me because I might get sick or might leave me when it happens? I understood and empathized with him - not sympathized, because Sean didn't want that.
Emery was wonderful. He was strong, supportive and a really good love interest.
The other thing is that while this was the main focus of the book, there was also a subplot that forced the two of them together for the good of a troubled teen.
D.H. Starr blended this all together into a great story.
Have you ever read a book that you keep saying, "One more chapter, and I'll cook dinner?" or "One more chapter, and I'll go to bed."? And dinner is late and you stay up way past your bedtime because one more chapter turns into finishing the book? Well, D.H. Starr's Perfect for Me is that type of book. A compelling and unique plot coupled with wonderful characters who capture your heart make this book impossible to put down and leave you wanting just a little more time with our lead protagonists.
In spite of the seriousness of the topics in Perfect for Me, this story is not at all depressing. It is quite hopeful as Mr. Starr dispels some of the myths surrounding an HIV positive diagnosis. With proper medication, safe sex and living a healthy lifestyle, HIV is not a death sentence. For Sean Sullivan, the biggest impact his diagnosis has is on his love life. Always upfront with his potential lovers, his HIV status has ended many relationships before they have had the chance to begun. Sean then decides it would be simpler to date only other HIV positive men, but that decision is immediately challenged when he meets social worker Emery Benton.
Despite the many undeniable reasons why Sean and Emery should not date, their sizzling sexual attraction is too strong to ignore. Sean has the most to lose if their relationship does not work out and he quickly puts the brakes on their romance. But Emery has an endless supply of patience and understanding, and they continue to date and get to know one another. But when Sean encounters an unexpected setback, he ends their relationship. But the situation with Lamar keeps pulling the men together and Emery refuses to give up on Sean.
The other story arc in Perfect for Me dealing with Lamar and his dysfunctional and abusive family life is heartbreakingly realistic. Lamar's love for and loyalty to his mother leads him to make the wrong decision again and again. Yet neither Sean nor Emery is willing to give up on providing him the opportunity for a better future.
If we lived in a perfect world, the children who need the intervention of Child Protective Services would have champions like the characters in Perfect for Me. Emery works tirelessly in his role as a case worker and he remains refreshingly unjaded by the harsh realities of his job. Sean is the type of principal every student should be lucky enough to have. One who sees the promise in a young man's future despite the fact that Lamar's home life is less than ideal. And every child who ends up in foster care should have someone as caring and devoted as Sonya Johnson.
I was emotionally invested in all of the characters and storylines in Perfect for Me. None of the various story arcs overpower the novel. Instead each provides depth to the characters and enriches the overall plot. D.H. Starr deftly handles the difficult topic of HIV with sensitivity and he gently educates the reader in a matter of fact manner.
A captivating story that should be on everyone's reading list.
I received a complimentary copy for review.
This is a difficult story line to deal with, but D.H. Starr has done it justice. Sean, the main character, is compelled to tell any and all potential lovers that he is HIV positive (as he should) knowing that they will make their excuses to hit the door as fast as possible (and they do). That alone, is hard on the self-esteem. It was hard for Sean to accept the fact that someone like Emery was willing to take a chance on him for who he is, not for the health issues he has. If only Sean could ever accept himself and see himself as others see him. Emery is self-confident and knows what he wants. Starr has given us a good subject line and good character build-up that allows the reader in. I recommend it.
A different approach to the issues in this story. Much of the sex scenes are imaginary, which is odd. There' s way more information supplied on type and color of clothing, menu selections, food items, favors, and brand names than I'd prefer. I guess it's important to the author. The ending was a bit disappointing. It comes on suddenly from an unexpected direction, and ends, well, it just ends. The issues that lead up to it are not resolved. The relationship is, but everything else that was involved is just left unfinished.
