This book is a beautiful and complete portrait of strange hippie compounds on remote islands, a person struggling to keep a gentle heart in the midst of unpredictable people and crushing isolation, and alien and inhospitable insects.
This story feels woven out of memoir, literary fiction, and prose poem all at once. It's both raw and considered, centered and brimming with momentum, realistically heartbreaking and unpretentiously hopeful. The central figure (maybe Snakes herself) lets readers see into her strikingly funny insights in the face of the daily complexities and disappointments of a fully-lived life unfolding on the page. You can read it in one day but will remember it forever!
If you've ever tried to leave the mainstream world to follow your own truth just to discover, once you arrived, that there were just too many charlatans then this book is for you! It's a hilarious account of a couple's journey to find that special "thing" we're all looking for but instead finding something we're all too familiar with - fallible humans. Snakes' writing is raw, wry and witty and I highly recommend this book!
